Viola Minnesota Gopher Count 2008 will be held on June 19th
Since 1874 people have traveled to Viola Minnesota on
the third Thursday of June to celebrate the Viola
Gopher Count. This event is now second oldest
in the nation. This event was originated after local farmer's efforts
were rewarded for reducing the gopher population in this Southeastern
Minnesota township. The gopher was and continues today to be a
destructive nuisance on this rural community.
Events begin on Wednesday evening with a spectacular talent show and
fireworks display. On Thursday, the grand parade begins at 10:00 A.M.
rain or shine. Following the parade there are many events to keep you
entertained
throughout the day. They
include a Case tractor/equipment show, soap box
derby, crowning of the Gopher Count royalty, doll
buggy parade, pie eating contests, ladies nail driving contest, tug of
war, races, a polka dance in the town hall. The
evening is topped off with a street dance (rain or shine) under the big
tent.
Stop by the Viola Gopher Count for a fun filled day of events, rides,
food, and good old fashioned charm.
